Theodore Roosevelt
R257 R210 Discovery Miles 2 100 Save R47 (18%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Written in the late nineteenth century and first published in Harper's Round Table magazine in 1896, this collection of articles details turn-of-the-century America's rugged wilderness. Good Hunting is an engaging read for those whose interests lie in hunting sports, and nature. Roosevelt, being the first president to begin many of the national park conservation programs in twentieth-century America, was a lover of the outdoors, and his writings are filled with notations and observations of the lands that he explored. From hunting elks, wolves, and bucks, Roosevelt provides stunning insight into some of northwestern America's most well-known inhabitants. Good Hunting is a fascinating historical portal through which we can view a celebrated sportsman, president, and keen observer of the outdoors. The seven chapters in this book range from classic hunting articles, memorable anecdotes from other outdoorsmen, and even a detailed piece on the specifics of ranching a topic of much interest at the turn of the century. This is a classic read for anyone wanting to learn more about a man who was so loved by a country, and to escape to the America of yesteryear. Skyhorse Publishing is proud to publish a broad range of books for hunters and firearms enthusiasts. We publish books about shotguns, rifles, handguns, target shooting, gun collecting, self-defense, archery, ammunition, knives, gunsmithing, gun repair, and wilderness survival. We publish books on deer hunting, big game hunting, small game hunting, wing shooting, turkey hunting, deer stands, duck blinds, bowhunting, wing shooting, hunting dogs, and more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to publishing books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked by other publishers and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.

Written during his days as a ranchman in the Dakota Bad Lands, these two wilderness tales by Theodore Roosevelt endure today as part of the classic folklore of the West. The narratives provide vivid portraits of the land as well as the people and animals that inhabited it, underscoring Roosevelt's abiding concerns as a naturalist.

Originally published in 1885, Hunting Trips of a Ranchman chronicles Roosevelt's adventures tracking a twelve-hundred-pound grizzly bear in the pine forests of the Bighorn Mountains.  Yet some of the best sections are those in which Roosevelt muses on the beauty of the Bad Lands and the simple pleasures of ranch life.  The British Spectator said the book "could claim an honorable place on the same shelf as Walton's Compleat Angler."  The Wilderness Hunter, which came out in 1893, remains perhaps the most detailed account of the grizzly bear ever recorded.   Introduction by Stephen E. Ambrose.

"We cannot do great deeds unless we are willing to do the small things that make up the sum of greatness." on Action

"The American people are good-natured to the point of lax indifference; but once roused, they act with the most straightforward and practical resolution." on America

Speak softly and carry a big stick you will go far. If a man continually blusters, if he lacks civility, a big stick will not save him from trouble; and neither will speaking softly avail, if back of the softness there does not lie strength, power. on the Big Stick

We are, as a whole, still in that low state of civilization where we do not understand that it is also vandalism wantonly to destroy or to permit the destruction of what is beautiful in nature, whether it be a cliff, a forest, or a species of mammal or bird. Here in the United States we turn our rivers and streams into sewers and dumping-grounds, we pollute the air, we destroy forests, and exterminate fishes, birds and mammals not to speak of vulgarizing charming landscapes with hideous advertisements. But at last it looks as if our people were awakening. on Natural Resources

The public life of Theodore Roosevelt (1858 1919) was marked by his service as the twenty-sixth President of the United States, Vice President, Governor of New York State, Assistant Secretary of the Navy, U.S. Civil Service Commissioner, President of the New York City Police Commission, and New York State Assemblyman. In his life outside of government he was famous as an author, naturalist, rancher, big game hunter, and explorer. The twentieth century would become known as the American Century, and it was Theodore Roosevelt, through his foreign policy, who ushered the United States into the ranks of the world's great powers. In domestic affairs, he used his presidential powers to level the playing field between capital and labor, to protect consumers, and to establish a conservation program that was far-sighted and comprehensive, covering the nation's natural resources, its wilderness areas, its endangered species, its scenic beauty, and the cultural artifacts of its indigenous peoples.

Distilled from Roosevelt s voluminous writings and speeches, In the Words of Theodore Roosevelt is a discerning collection of quotations by this American icon who continues to inspire and captivate an extraordinary array of twenty-first-century Americans. Carefully selected and organized by topic by Patricia O Toole, these quotations reflect the vast range of Roosevelt s interests, the depth of his wisdom, his almost superhuman energy, and his directness. Many of the issues that Roosevelt addressed from America s international role to the environment remain pressing concerns today, giving his century-old words remarkable currency. This singular collection of quotations enhanced by O Toole s illuminating introductory essay, notes on biographical and historical context, and bibliographies of Roosevelt s writings is a trove for writers, teachers, students, and all who recognize Theodore Roosevelt s unique role in U.S. history."

R235 Discovery Miles 2 350 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"The Rough Riders," by Theodore Roosevelt, is the author's memoir of his experiences as part of the First United States Volunteer Cavalry during the Spanish-American War. The book's title comes from the nickname earned by the unit. Originally published in 1899, the book is Roosevelt's account of the recruitment and training of the Rough Riders, their voyage to Cuba, their battles, and their return home. Much of the book concerns what, in Roosevelt's opinion, makes for good soldiers and good leaders. Although the book first appeared over a century ago, many of Roosevelt's observations are startlingly relevant to contemporary warfare; he discusses wartime refugees, guerrilla warfare, wartime atrocities, and battlefield news correspondents. Other topics covered include illness among the troops and the impact of weather and terrain on warfare. He also discusses occasional humorous material, such as the nicknames some soldiers earned. Roosevelt includes fascinating technical details about the weapons of this era. Although he frankly discusses the violence, wounds, and deaths of the battlefield, the book gives the impression that Roosevelt saw war as a grand adventure-even fun on a certain level. The writing style is very engaging and has a clear, matter-of-fact quality. Roosevelt's admiration and love for his troops ultimately gives the book a real warmth and humanity, making Rough Riders truly a landmark in the rich canon of American military memoirs.

The Master of Game (Paperback): Edward of Norwich The Master of Game (Paperback)
Edward of Norwich; Edited by William A. Baillie-Grohman, F.N. Baillie-Grohman; Contributions by Theodore Roosevelt
R854 Discovery Miles 8 540 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Master of Game Edward of Norwich. Edited by William A. and F. N. Baillie-Grohman. Foreword by Theodore Roosevelt "Of exceptional interest for the light shed on the ethos, style, and tastes of the secular aristocracy of the later Middle Ages. . . . A real boon to the historian. . . . For those of us who still admire and cherish the huntsman's now threatened world, "The Master of Game" has a particular appeal."--"London Review of Books" "The Master of Game" is the oldest and most important work on the chase in the English language. Based primarily on Gaston de Foix's "Livre de chasse," originally composed in 1387, "The Master of Game" was written by Edward of Norwich at his leisure between 1406 and 1413, mostly while being held prisoner for having treasonous designs against his cousin, Henry IV. While much of the book is almost an exact translation of de Foix, Edward added five chapters of his own to form the major source for our knowledge of the medieval hunt. The book begins with a description of the nature of popular quarry, such as the hare, deer, and badger, including their behavior, characteristics, and even smells, and then moves to a discussion of various hunting dog breeds and how to train them. The medieval chase was a ritual event, so the book continues with an explanation of the various rules and techniques for a successful hunt, including how food was to be distributed among the hunters, the support persons, and the dogs. Weapons and traps of choice are also described, as well as the different horn calls used for communication. "The Master of Game" is a unique text for naturalists, hunters, and persons interested in social history. Although hunting is nowadays far removed from most people's experience, it was of major interest in the time of Edward of Norwich for ritual, sport, and, of course, food. Some knowledge of the chase was essential for all persons of medieval times. This edition, the first paperback ever of the original version edited in 1909, includes a hearty foreword by Theodore Roosevelt, who adds some important contextual information about the chase and draws on his own vast hunting experience. A delight to read, even for those who are not keen on the sport, "The Master of Game" has, as one review exclaimed," all Chaucer's freshness, love of the open sky and fragrant woodland." Edward of Norwich, Second Duke of York (1373?-1415) was cousin of King Richard II and became a supporter of the House of Lancaster in 1399. He was killed at the Battle of Agincourt. William A. Baillie-Grohman (1851-1921) was an outdoor writer, adventurer, and explorer who spent much of his life developing business interests in British Columbia, Canada. Florence Nickalls Baillie-Grohman was often his collaborator. Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919), the twenty-sixth President of the United States, was an avid outdoorsman and wrote extensively about the wilderness and big-game hunting. 2005 360 pages 5 x 7 1/2 24 illus. Before he ascended to the highest office in the land as the United States youngest president, Theodore Roosevelt, with illustrations by Frederic Remington, though a New York City man born and bred, was a devotee of the Old West. In 1888, he published this charming ode to the American frontier, from the rewarding hard work of a rancher on the open plains to the pleasures of hunting the big game of mountains high. Today, the inimitable prose and infectious enthusiasm of Roosevelts writing here serves as much to limn a unique aspect of the character of the nation as it sings an elegy for a disappearing way of life.
